How Your Postal Code Affects You

Most people see postal codes as these numbers that they need to know for only a few purposes like filling out forms or for sending and receiving letters. However, postal codes actually affect you in more ways that you think. It can affect such things as how much you’ll need to pay for insurance when going on activities like an Amsterdam canal tour.

So, if you have ever thought about why you would want to know about your postal code, here are some of the most obvious answers.

Health

Believe it or not, your postal code can actually determine how healthy you likely are. Now, it’s worth noting that this kind of categorization isn’t exactly perfect and it doesn’t apply to every single individual in any given postal code. However, it does reflect the likelihood of a person being healthy or the opposite.

For example, some postal codes have more obesity cases relative to the overall population. The same goes for death caused by cancer or other health problems. Normally, this really wouldn’t affect your situation all that much, especially if you make sure to care for your health. However, it will inevitably affect certain services.

Insurance

Insurance companies are notorious for trying to get as much money out of clients while paying out as little as possible. When it comes to postal codes, a person could be charged significantly more than others simply because it’s been determine that the area is known for having more unhealthy people than neighbouring regions.

This would inevitably affect premium rates, which are already quite volatile to begin with. Then there’s the matter of how crazy the Uber drivers in a particular postal code can be, which could then affect car insurance or life insurance. This can be trouble, especially if you’re thinking about going on that dinner cruise Amsterdam trip.

Death

Finally, your postal code can affect your death. Specifically, it can affect how long you are likely to live. Again, this is not indicative of anything applying to a specific person. If you take care of yourself by eating right, exercising and staying away from activities that might lead to your death, your chances of living longer would be improved. However, by taking other factors into account such as rate of road accidents or your proximity to a coal power plant, your chances decrease significantly.
